REVIEW – Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)
BALLS TO THE WALL FUN!
Director - Christopher McQuarrie
Starring - Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Simon Pegg and more.
Tom Cruise returns for his sixth outing as Ethan Hunt and proves yet again that he is no mood of slowing down.
The sixth instalment of the Mission series begins with a mission going south. Ethan, Benji and Luther lose three plutonium cores to the Apostles, a rogue terrorist organisation formed off the ashes of the Syndicate. The IMF now must recover the plutonium and save the world from the evil clutches of an evil terrorist named John Lark. What follows is a globe-trotting, fast paced, action spectacle that ends up being the best of this 22-year old franchise.
This is the first Mission film to retain the Director from a previous instalment and Chris McQ does a terrific job at giving this one a completely different aesthetic look and feel from Rogue Nation. Right from the onset (a terrific dream sequence), Fallout is mounted as a much darker film than its predecessor.
Cruise and McQuarrie have stated that they built the story of the film around the stunts, which they discussed during much earlier stages of development. And boy, did they succeed! McQ does a fantastic job at keeping the action real, fast and insanely mind-blowing, all at the same time. Cruise is known for his knack for death-defying stunts and with Fallout, his dedication towards his craft is on full display.
In fact, Fallout is one of the best shot films in recent times. The decision to use real locations and practical action really paid off big time. The cinematography is terrific and really puts you right in the middle of the action. The bathroom brawl scene is one of the best hand to hand combat scenes ever filmed on camera. The HALO jump scene is a technical achievement in its own. And the Paris chase and the helicopter chase sequences keep you on the edge of your seat.
So, to conclude. Fallout is one of the greatest action films ever made. The action is fantastic, the twists are clever and the stakes are sky-high. Watch this one for Tom Cruise, who’s sheer love for his work is visible everytime he jumps off a building, crashes a helicopter or jumps out of a plane.
PRO TIP: Watch this one on the biggest screen possible.
